Owner: Kev Wright ,
Burton on Trent, United Kingdom

Comments: ”I'd been away from motorcycles for over 20 years and in 2002 decided to have another bike.

I'd owned a Suzuki GT380 (wanted a GT550 but because of the fact I had Diabetes was unable to obtain insurance over 500cc) and three MZ's. I decided that I would go back to what I knew and saw a GS550 American import for sale at RAP Super bikes in London.

So off we went and the bike was very good except for a dent in the tank. I decided to give it a try (now remember I hadn't been on a bike for over 20 years) so a run around a very busy part of London followed with no problems. After a bit of haggling the owner wouldn't budge on the price and so it remained in London.

After some time I decided to buy a bike that although roadworthy wouldn't win any concourse awards, a black GS550E, in case I found biking wasn't for me. I'm glad to say it was and a few months later I bought an immaculate GT550 for £1,200 fully restored (picture attached).

I enjoyed this bike for two years, winning the classic award at a bike show in 2004 and sold it in 2005 having added one exhaust pipe for £2,000.

I was looking on the Suzuki owners club site in December 2003 and noticed a GT380 for £500 and contacted the owner and arranged to view it on new years day. We arrived and took one look and pushed the money in his hand before he changed his mind. It was immaculate having been restored at a cost of £2,500 by a previous owner.

I rode it home from Rugby in Warwickshire, kept it two years. It also won a show in 2004. I sold it in 2005 for £1,200. I decided that because of the two GT's I owned there was one missing; I'd always wanted a GT750. The fact that they were as rare as rocking hoses made the search difficult. I went all the way to Cornwall one Friday afternoon to look at one that was supposed to been in really good condition, looked at it, rode it and left it there.

I spotted a J model in candy Lavender (the colour I wanted), it had only been advertised a couple of hours on the Internet and was already sold . The guy said that a friend of his may be selling his J and would give him my number. He phoned me in the evening and we spent 1.5 hours talking about the bike. He told me that it had been professionally restored in 1989 and had all the receipts to prove it. He also said that it had won a prize at The Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show. He would only sell it to an enthusiast and after our lengthy talk said I certainly was an enthusiast and it's mine for £3,500. I borrowed the money and it's the best deal ever.

I've now owned the bike for three years. I've also got a K and B model now. I've attached some pics and when I've time I'll continue the story.”

Comments: ”Here's a pic of my bike. Suzuki GS1000S from 1980 with a 160 hp engine from a Bandit 1200. 1,230cc, Mikuni TMR36 carburetors, 6 speeds.”

1987 Suzuki GSX 400 S

Owner: Eduardo Lopez, Spain

Comments: ”I changed my old little Bultaco for the GSX400 back in '88, then as my only vehicle 'for everything'.

Minimal modifications through the years: It lost the cockpit fairing many years ago. The exhausts are not original but are a good copy. The handle bar is not original neither but similar too, though now it is chromed instead of black. The seat had to be re-covered some years ago.

Bought new in Spain, it came from Suzuki France but year of making is not stated anywhere... probably 1987.

After 18 years of usage and close to 90,000 km there is no significant problem that I can blame on it and still looks pretty good. I am changing to a Burgman 400 with a top box; looking for better protection and convenience as now I started to commute 75 km almost daily by suburban highways.”

1981 Suzuki GS 1000 G

Owner: Daniel Mailloux,
Le Plessis-Robinson, France

Comments: ”I am an owner of a Suzuki '81 GS1000GX, it is me on the photography. I bought it in 2002 from  a friend who didn't ride it with 31,000 km on the meter. Now it has 47,000 km.

She is in original state, I have only replaced rear shock absorbers for Koni, the original shocks being out of service. They were worn out and dangerous.

The battery has caused me a few problems and I have to replace him the alternator. Some of the spare parts I need for my Suzuki I can order from Germany, there's much stock in Europe or directly from Japan (I have to wait two to three months!)

I use unleaded fuel (SP 95 in France), she consumes 5.5 to 6.8 liters for 100 km.

It is a formidable motorbike, very comfortable, easy to ride and it gives me great pleasure. I use it regularly and other motorcyclists always ask me of the year of the bike and tell me that they don't see the model often on the road. Indeed , it's not a model you see very often in France, although the GS850G is not as rare a model here.

It's a wonderful motorbike with a fantastic sound!”
