2003 Suzuki VL 800 Intruder Volusia

Owner: Michael Oellig,
Clinton, Indiana, USA

Comments: “Here are some pictures of my '03 Suzuki VL800 Intruder Volusia. It was Suzuki's 40th Anniversary Edition Model. I bought it new in October 2003 completely stock from the dealer.

I have chromed just about everything on the bike. Added the windshield, driving lights, floorboards, LeatherLyke saddle bags and also a Mustang seat with the driver's backrest. I also removed the stock pipes and added the Vance and Hines Straightshot Exhaust. Plus all the other numerous goodies; fork bullets, air cleaner cover, chrome neck covers, new grips, front brake cover, mud flaps, chrome tail light cover, speedometer visor, Chrome radiator cover.

I also replaced the stock tires with a set of Maxis Classic Whitewalls to set off the Pearl White paint job.

Current Mileage is 11,800 miles.

I absolutely love this bike. For a 805cc engine, it has plenty of power and it has won many trophies in motorcycle shows.

I just wish the weather was nice year round here in Indiana so I could ride every day of the week. Anyone considering buying the VL800 Volusia of the new model, the Boulevard C50, will not regret it. Hope you like it!”

“I have been trying to find out as much as I can about a bike I have recently bought, a Suzuki GSX400TX. However I seem to be drawing blanks where ever I look. I have found out that it was sold in the UK between 1981-1983 and it didn't sell very well. It is prone to rust as well as CDI problems,” Bren writes.

Owner: Bren Bulwark,
Somerset, England

Comments: “I bought my GSX400TX via eBay and have had it at my house now for about a month. It was bought as a non runner, and had been stood for two years. It was up and running in two hours. A clean of the fuel tank/filters, fresh fuel, new spark plugs, fresh oil, new battery and loads of "start you bastard" carb spray.

As far as I can tell 'not being mechanically minded' it is standard, rusty in places the front forks weep but other than that it seems OK, we will see when I put it in for an MOT. It has now done just over 30,000 miles. I would be interested in finding a place to get parts for the bike as I'm sure they will be hard to get hold of.

I have yet to past my motorbike test, I have done my CBT and am just waiting for the time and money to do my full test. but this will be my first real bike so I don't think I am qualified to answer any questions on how the bike is to ride. I plan to use the bike for fun and commuting to work. I didn't fancy one of the new plastic fantastic bikes, so I plunked for an old classic.

Attached are a couple of photos of the bike. the rev counter gauge is off on the photo due to the plastic/glass being renewed.”

1982 Suzuki GS 850 GL

Owner: Jim (Jamie) Planty,
Lakeland, Florida, USA

Comments: “Here's a picture of my '82 GS850GL, purchased in the fall of 1999, in Winthrop New York. It had 7,100 miles on it , now it has 15,000.

I've restored about 50% of the bike; forks, ignition switch, tank, side covers, tires in 2004. I also added the rack/adjustable backrest and Plexifairing at that time.

I have been complimented many times on this bikes' sweet classic look. It’s nimble, comfortable, pretty quick for one up and it just keeps going.

The 850 has a “full” counterweighted crank making pretty smooth, the 1100 had a “pork Chop” style counterweighted Crank, giving more yank but also more vibration. I’ve also heard that the 1100 has more frame flex than the 850.”

1988 Suzuki VS 1400 Intruder

Owner: Mika Löfbacka,
Kauhava, Finland

Comments: “Here is an Intruder from Finland, total 277,500 km on the meter. I've ridden 224,000 km with it during the past 12 years. Its engine has never been opened, I've only fixed some minor faults, generator and clutch being the largest parts that I have needed to repair.

After two years the front forks started to gain length. For many summers I've been driving at the Alps, in Spain and of course at the nice mountains of Norway. In summer of 2005, the Intruder found its way to Route des Grandes Alpes, which I highly recommended.

In September 2005, the worst thing happened to me when closing car turned towards me and now I carry two titanium bars in my back.

Amazingly the same Intruder is still in use. Sitting position and suspension do not fit really well for my back anymore, but my attitude is still OK!

Can anyone tell me how long (miles/km) the Intruder engine can be ridden without opening the engine? I've been saying that I will turn my Intruder to a rat bike by riding it, but I'm afraid it will last longer than myself!

Keep on driving, the middle line is relaxing!”

Owner: Gary Thomas,
Cape Town, South Africa

Comments: “I have been biking since I was at high school (1977) and have only been owning Suzuki motorcycles: 175PE Scrambler, GS400 Cruiser, GS650 Katana, 1100 Katana. Now I own a '97 Suzuki RF400R which has only covered 13,500 km this far.

I have become a 'fairweather' rider as I only ride when the weather is good. Have not been attending rallies as frequently as before, but do not miss our annual Toy Run where we take toys to the under privileged kids. 6,500 bikes in attendance this year.”
