Third generation — 2017 onwards

I have tried to tell the SV 650 and SV 650 S model histories on this page as I know it. This is part 3 of the Suzuki SV650 story. It covers model years 2017 onwards.

The third generation of the SV650 was revealed in May 2016 and came to the shops in June the same year. With the updgraded model version SV650 returned into the USA and was marketed as a 2017-model year product.

For the 2017 model year (available early/mid-2016), Suzuki brought the SV650 back to its USA lineup, with both an ABS and non-ABS model. Getting some updates along the way as well, the 2017 Suzuki SV650 continued to be a popular model for Suzuki. The Japanese manufacturer said that over 60 new parts had been added to the 2017 Suzuki SV650’s v-twin power plant, which now produced more power, more torque, improved fuel economy, and lower emissions as a result. The new includes pistons were designed for optimal rigidity and weight, and used new resin-coated piston skirts for less friction and greater durability. A dual-spark ignition had also been added to the combustion chamber, while the “Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve” injector system included a 10-hole fuel injector setup. The SV650 chassis too had been reworked, with 70 new parts being added, according to Suzuki. The result is a slimmer and lighter motorcycle than its predecessor – by a factor of 15 lbs. Braking is done by 290mm front discs, and a 240mm rear disc, with ABS as an option.

2017 SV650 and SV650 ABS motorcycles were available at Suzuki dealers in USA as an early-release in June 2016, recreated and updated, and priced lower than the 2015 SFV650. With the 2017 model the SV650/A has returned to the more conventional styling of the pre-Gladius naked version. The wet weight for the non-ABS model was 195 kg (430 lbs) wet and 197 kg (434 lbs) for the ABS model. Its engine developed now an additional four horse power and featured a low-speed stalling prevention system (low RPM assist) to make the bike more suited to beginners and easier to ride in stop/go traffic. The new engine met Euro 4 emission regulations. The upgraded SV650 hd also s a new, slim, steel frame. Seat height was lowered from 800 mm (31.5 in) to 785mm (30.9"). Suzuki expanded its SV650 roadster lineup for the 2018 model year with a 1970s café racer insipred SV650X. The "X" adds some subtle changes to the bodywork, plus a not-so-subtle bullet fairing to make a historical connection to café racers from the seventies. Seat-to-bar measurement on the SV650X is about 2.5 inches longer the SV650, pulling you forward into an aggressive riding position. The 33.3-inch peg-to-bar distance keeps you tucked close to the SV650X’s tank. The fuel tank's emblem has been changed from the signature "S" mark to the Suzuki logo. The design has a definite retro look. Additionally, the tank capacity has been increased from 13.8 liter to 14.5 liter. Café racer looks are key to the styling of the SV650X. The distinctive headlight cowling and clip-on handlebars assert a sportier appearance and stance that hark back to the original heritage racers. A tuck-and-roll seat and ”Suzuki” logo on the tank definitely add punch to this classy-appeal. The SV650X ABS even has bright LED fog lamps available as an option, lending a unique touch to the stylish looks. 2018 colors: Metallic Triton Blue / Pearl Glacier White or Glass Sparkle Black with red frame/wheels. 2019 Suzuki year code: L9

The SV650 got new front brakes and colors for 2019. For the standard version, there's a grey version with a dark red trellis frame and red wheels, all-black model and a white and black variant – with black and blue stripes on the white fuel tank – will sport a blue frame and wheels. The SV650X – which has lower clip-on handlebars for a sportier riding position – came with a new brown tuck-roll seat with a white and black retro livery. Both models also benefit from an upgrade to new four-piston front brake calipers in 2019. The suspension system was updated for the whole SV650 family across the board. It brings a spring-preload feature to the front end that is difficult to match at this price point and genre. 2020 Suzuki year code: M0

The changes in the 2020 model are limited only to colour and graphics upgrade. The 2020 Suzuki V-Strom 250 will be retailed in a new twin shade ‘Pearl Nebula Black/High Tech Silver Metallic’ shade. However, this option is only available with ABS. This option includes a red coloured V-Strom badging on the beak as well as a red coloured strip. The headlamp rim gets a chrome rim. The fuel tank is also styled with new stickers along with red rim stickers. Also introduced is a ‘Triton Blue Metallic No.2’ option. Besides that, ‘Diamond Red Metallic’ colour has been discontinued. ‘Pearl Nebula Black’ and ‘Pearl Nebular Black/Solid Dazzling Cool Yellow’ shades have been retained. The ABS version gets a shorter heat shield on the silencer and a smaller knuckle guard. In Australia, a Learner approved version was available that produces 35 kW (47 hp) @ 8 500 rpm with 56.5 Nm of torque @ 4 000 rpm to meet the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) requirements, while the full-powered version punches out 56.0 kW (75 hp) @ 8 500 rpm with 64 Nm of torque @ 8,100rpm. 2020 standard colors: Metallic Mystic Silver (YMD), Metallic Mat Black No.2 (YKV), Glass Sparkle Black (YVB) SV650X color: Metallic Mat Black No.2 (YKV)

2023 Suzuki year code: M3

In September 2022, new colors were announced for the 2023 Suzuki SV650 but no mechanical updates. The new colors are Metallic Reflective Blue (QT8), Glass Sparkle Black / Solid Iron Grey (BTH) and Metallic Matt Black No.2 (YKV). The blue and the black versions (at first presented as ”Blue Las Vegas” and ”Black Dubai”) has bronze colored frames and wheels. The gray/black model (”Gray London”) has grey trelling frame and red wheels. In Japan, the available color choises for the standard model were Metallic Reflective Blue (QT8), Glass Sparkle Black / Solid Iron Grey (BTH) and Glass Sparkle Black (YKB). The SV650X color was Matt Sword Silver Metallic (QKA).

The Suzuki SV650X with a café racer style bikini fairing is back. The 2023 SV650X is offered in Metallic Matte Sword Silver (QKA). It has a black frame and all black silencer. The wheels are bronze colored.

In August 2014, the new 2025-year's model of the SV650 were revealed by Suzuki. No technical changes were made for the model, but Suzuki launched three new colours for the SV650.  The legendary middleweight, this year being the 25th year of production for this street bike, comes in a brand new Pearl Vigor Blue with colour matched frame and wheels.
