Suzuki RGV250 Gamma
1996—1999

I have tried to tell the story of the Suzuki RG250 Gamma as I know it. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

The last version of the RGV250 Gamma, the 1996 RGV250SP, launched in February 1996, was equipped with a new liquid-cooled 2-cycle 70° V-twin engine of the same type as Suzuki's works racer. Its engine delivered more than 60 bhp unrestricted (some claim 70 bhp) and it had a lightweight and rigid aluminum twin spar frame.

The compact engine enabled a short wheelbase for light and easy handling. In addition, it had fairings with aerodynamic characteristics fed back from the racer. The transmission mechanism had also the same specifications as the racer, such as a cassette-type transmission with easy gear replacement and a dry-type clutch with low mechanical loss of power.

The RGV250SP had special 32mm carburetors with sensors for the airbox pressure. The bike also had electric start (the only RGV250 to have an electric starter) and used ram-air technology (a pipe next to the headlight going straight into the frame). RGV250SP produced nearly 70 bhp when de-restricted. In Japan, the power output was restricted to 40 hp, in Italy the power output was given to 67 hp.

No standard version of the RGV250 was made after 1995, only the (VJ23A) SP version. It was produced 1996—1998 without modifications and appeared in Suzuki catalogs in Japan during 1999.

Color options: Marble Viscaria Magenta / Special White (F9H), Candy Moon Shadow Blue / Special White (F9J)
Lucky Strike version: Special White No.2 / Pure Red No.2 (G11)

All the specifications on this page, if not mentioned otherwise, are valid for the Japanese domestic models.
