I would be grateful of any contributions sales brochures, magazine ads,
magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material
in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send

1990 Suzuki RGV250 Gamma SP, Pearl Still White / Parsec Blue No. 2 (3SH) |

1990 Suzuki year code: L

Two years after its first launch, the next generation of RGV250 was presented. The VJ21A was replaced by the VJ22A in January 1990.
Lots of changes wre made to the RGV250. A curved ”banana” swingarm, double exhaust pipes and inverted front fork were the most obvious new features. The basic shape of the exterior is the same as the previous generation, but the upper surface of the fuel tank is now flat.
For the 1990 year's model the RGV250 Gamma was updated with
new carburetors (from 32 mm to 34 mm), power valves and new
front suspension. A new semi-frame CAL-BOX swingarm was introduced (crescent aluminium box, curved on the right side, straight on the left). It gave better
ground clearance and allowed to draw the exhaust pipes where
the swingarm should have been. Both exhaust pipes were now drawn
at the right side of the bike.
The new swingarm stiffened the
rear end quite dramatically but also increased the dry weight from
129 kg to 139 kg.
With a new rear swingarm the front end was
also rebuilt with the new 41 mm (1.6") upside down suspension forks. The power output and torque was
increased slightly and a 4.50-17 rear wheel added to the list
of upgrades.
The carburetor had evolved into a new slingshot carburetor that electronically controls the air flow. SAPC (Suzuki Advanced Power Control) electronically controls the engine and AETC II (Automatic Exhaust Timing Control II) controls the exhaust timing, are adopted. A new method that controls the operation of the valve placed in the exhaust port increased power at lower revs.
Maximum torque was slightly increased from 37 to 38 Nm (3.8 to 3.9 kg-m) at 8,000 rpm.
With the introduction of the power valves came the biggest problem
of the RGV250. The valve valves wears down from opening and
closing and can collide with the piston and brake. Happens sometimes
in bikes with high milage.
RGV250FL, a Sports Production model (SP), was also launched in January 1990. It had dry clutch, fully adjustable suspension front and rear and cassette type close ratio gearbox. In February Suzuki launched a sligthly different version of the the Sports Production model, RGV250FNL (SP2), with standard gearbox.
Carburetors: 34mm Mikini VM34S. Rear suspension: full floating
suspension system, gas/coil spring, oil damped, spring pre-load
fully adjustable, extension damping force 4-Way adjustable and
compression damping force 19-Way adjustable.
The engine performance figures vary strongly between different countries. In Japan, the peak power
was restricted to 45 hp, an unrestricted version delivered, according to some sources, 62 hp.

1990 RGV250L color options: Pearl Still White / Parsec Blue No. 2 (3SH), Pearl Novelty Black (33J), Brade Silver Metallic (0UL)
1990 RGV250FL, RGV250FNL color: Pearl Still White / Parsec Blue No. 2 (3SH)
All the specifications on this page, if not mentioned otherwise, are valid for the Japanese domestic models. |
