 Suzuki GSR400
2006–2017
I have tried to tell the Suzuki GSR 400 model history on this page as I know it.
I would be grateful of any contributions sales brochures, magazine ads,
magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material
in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send
them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible.
If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these
instructions. |

The Suzuki GSR400 that appeared in the shops in May 2006 was a naked sports bike with a liquid-cooled in-line 4-cylinder DOHC engine mounted on an aluminum twin spar frame. It was a 398 cc version of the GSR600 that was launched for the export market. The GSR400 was targeted at the domestic Japanese market.
The design of the GSR400 and GSR600 models was strongly inspired by the Suzuki B-King,
the models were almost identical except for the exhaust system and the displacement of the engine. The engine of the GSR600 was based on the GSX-R600 of the same period and the GSR400 was created by reducing the cylinder bore from 67mm to 54.6 mm, scaling the engine down to 398cc to match the Japanese licensing system.
The Suzuki GSR600 was announced at the 2005 Paris Motor Show, and the GSR400 was unveiled at the 39th Tokyo Motor Show in the same year (late 2005).
The styling of the GSR models featured the odd-shaped headlight and the center-up mufflers, that were sticking out on both sides of the two round tail lights.
The brakes and the suspension were as good as any competitors' the powerful 4-piston front calipers came from the GSX-R, the 43 mm front fork had pre-load adjustment and the rear shock had both preload and return damping adjustment.
In 2007, a model with ABS brakes (GSR400A) was sold besides a version with normal brakes. The GSR400 had a 16 liter fuel tank, a 6-speed gearbox and 215 kg of gross weight (on versions with ABS)
The GSR400 engine was updated in
2009, due to the regulations regarding new emission standards. Short visor was mounted above the headlight. After that, only the ABS specification was being sold. No further modifications were made to the model apart from changes of color. The GSR400 was discontinued after 2017 season.
Suzuki GSR timeline
2006 GSR 600
The first model arrived at dealerships in January 2006. The model was marketed in the following countries/market areas: United Kingdom (E2), Australia (E24) and in EU (E19). In Europe it was also available as a model with restricted power output for those with A2 driver's license (motorcycles of a power not exceeding 35 kW/47 hp. The power restricted model was called GSR600U.
2006 GSR 600 S
A variant of the model, called the GSR600S or 'S'-model, was released middle of 2006. It differs from the standard model with a stock windshield, a radiator protector grill as well as carbon-fibre lamination for selected parts.
2006 GSR 400
GSR400, previously a Japanese domestic market model, became available to selected countries in May 2006. It shared the frame and the dimensions with the GSR600, the only difference being the engine capacity (399cc as opposed to 599cc), a smaller exhaust outlet, narrower rpm range and a plastic protective cover on the left side of the engine.
2007 GSR 600
ABS braking system was introduced to the range between 2007 and 2008 across different markets.
2010 was the last year of the GSR600. It was replaced by the GSR750 that appeared the following year. The GSR750, equipped with an engine derived from the GSX-R750, was introduced to the Japanese market in 2013.
2011 GSR 750
The GSR600 was replaced in 2011 with the 749cc GSR750 — a similar concept with a 2005 GSX-R750 derived engine, re-tuned for a more usable midrange at the expense of high end power.
2012 GSR 750 ABS
ABS braking system was added since 2012, 2015 the model was been sold in the USA for the first time (the GSR600 was never marketed in the USA). In 2016 the GSR750 was rebranded as the GSX-S750.

2008 Suzuki year code: K8

No 2008 version of the GSR400 was released. The bike didn't comply with the new exhaust gas regulations. The GSR400 came back with an upgraded engine and 61 hp peak power the following year instead. The manufacturer's voluntary restrictions on limiting the peak output had now been abolished.
 |

2009 Suzuki year code: K9

In March 2009, the GSR400 engine was upgraded increasing the engine performance and improving exhaust gas purification performance complying with the new exhaust gas standards.
By changing cams, injectors, and ECU (engine control unit), and adopting iridium plugs, the performance of the engine was improved, achieving a maximum output of 45 kW (61 PS) @ 12,000 rpm and improving throttle response. In addition, the maximum engine speed was set at 13,200 rpm, giving the engine characteristics to enjoy sportier driving in the high engine speed range. ISC (idle speed control) was adopted to achieve good startability and stable idling.
The rear mirrors were upgraded again. Now they were square and chrome plated instead being black.

I found the frame numbers for the GSR400 models manufactured between 2015 and 2017. As you can see, there were not many bike made. The business in 2016 was really slow, only five units were put together! The sales on last year of the GSR400 was a bit better, but after making 64 motorcycles Suzuki called it quits and discontinued the model.
