I have tried to tell the Suzuki DR 650 model history on this page as I know it. 1990 Suzuki year code: L

At the end of the 1980's the DR600 was the biggest offroad bike Suzuki had to offer. Honda had already put out its 650 Dominator and Suzuki's DR600 wasnt't quite powerful enough for the customers who knew there were bigger machines on the market. So Suzuki decided to make an larger and upgraded version of the DR600. The DR650 arrives in the beginning of 1990 in two different versions: DR650 Djebel (also called DR650R Dakar on some markets) and DR650RS. The appearence of the bikes are quite different but they shared the same mechanics. The most obvious differences between the models are that the Djebel (DR650R) didn't have the RS model's fairing and it had a dirt bike styled higher front mudguard. The RS was a lighter model, featuring smaller exhaust system etc. The DR650 engine is basically an enlargened DR600. It simply got bigger bore and longer stroke. But there's several differencies between the DR600 and the DR650 models. The whole bike, including the frame and suspension, was upgraded. The bigger brother is more comfortable than the 600 and its riding position is quite suitable for riding on the road as well on dirt. The both DR650 models featured a fuel tank of 21 liter and a massive aluminum luggage carrier.

The biggest news for the 1991 year's DR650 range was the introduction of the DR650RSE with electric start with automatic decompression system. The RSE was 15 kg (33 lbs) heavier than the RS, the electric starter, larger battery (12 Ah instead of 5) and more effencive alternator (200 W intead of 180) caused the extra weight. For easier handling, the RSE had 5 mm (0.2 inches) shorter trail and wheelbase compensating the bigger mass.

The 1992 year's model got smaller fuel tank (17 liter instaed of 21) and the aluminum rear carrier was replaced with a smaller one. The changes, among with other refinements, made it possible to give the model 8 kg (17,6 lbs) lower dry mass. The exhaust system was enlargened for better low-rev torque and the rear suspension was imporoved. The DR650 Djebel changes name to DR650R. There were no major upgrades made for the model until 1996. The only changes made between 1992 and 1995 were purely cosmetical.

1996 Suzuki year code: T

The DR650E was revised for 1996 for better handling and less weight. The new more compact engine gave less power but deliver it at lower revs, making it much more comfortable to use. There was no longer need to keep the revs above 3.000 rpm all the time to avoid the engine stalling. The smoother, yet less powerful, engine was made by upgrading the exgaust system (again) and increasing the bore by 5 mm (0.196 in) and shortening the stroke by 8 mm (0.315 in). The new engine ran very smoothly and didn't vibrate nearly as much as the engine of the RSE. Amazingly enough Suzuki achieved this smoothness by using just one balance shaft (to save weight) instead of the usual two found in most singles! New oil cooler. Weight was reduced in several details. The seat was now narrower (and less comfortable when riding longer distances), the fairing reduced to a small top fairing without a windshield, the suspension and the frame totally new and imporoved. The new DR650SE was no less than 25 kg (55 lbs) lighter than the DR650SE! The seat provided a choice of two heights by means of suspension adjustment. 1997 Suzuki year code: V

Based on the DR650SE mechanics, a new dual-purpose model was introduced by Suzuki in 1997 — the XF650 Freewind. The new model offered less less ground clearance and was more of a street/touring bike than offroad. A 19-inch front wheel instead of the DR650SE's 21-inch wheel. Just like in the DR650SE, you could lower the suspension and the seat height (30 mm/1.2 inches).
