page as I know it.
I would be grateful of any contributions sales brochures, magazine ads,
magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material
in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send

For
the model year of 2001 Suzuki introduced a new GSX-R model that
replaced the largest and most powerful of the racing replica family,
GSX-R1100. As the model name reveals, the engine's cylinder displacement
was 100 cc smaller than its predecessor but the new 988 cc engine
was more than adequate to give the GSX-R1000 enormous prestanda.
It delivers 160 bhp at 11 000 rpm and the bike was capable of
making a quarter mile in under 10 seconds.
The GSX-R1000 is light, powerful and more balanced than any other
street legal race replica and even many racing bikes! Naturally
there's models that are more suitable for touring and commuting
but if you are looking for a really fast bike that you like to
use both on track and on the road, then look no further. The GSX-R1000
is the bike for you. It's the best bike in its class.

The new GSX-R1000 was voted as the best Internation Bike Of
The Year in 2001 by 13 bike magazines from all over the world.
The GSX-R750 won the award in 1997.
The GSX-R1000 is not just an enlargened version of the GSX-R750,
although it shares many features with its little brother. The
main frame is basically the same in both models, but the material
used on the big brother is 0,5 mm thicker. According to Suzuki,
the torsional rigidity of the frame has increased 10% in comparison
with the 750. The dimensions of the bike have more in common
with the TT racer Suzuki RGV500 than the GSX-R750.
The GSX-R1000 engine is basically a redigned GSX-R750 engine.
The R1000 has 1 mm bigger bore and 13 mm longer stroke, newly
designed (sligtly lighter) pistons with lower crown and gear-driven
counter balancer, to mention a few differences. The engine weighs
59 kg (130 lbs) which is slightly heavier than the 750 engine
but 14 kg (31 lbs) lighter than the engine of the GSX-R1300
Hayabusa.
Using titanium for the exhaust pipe and the inside of the silencer
the R1000's exhaust system has become 1,8 kg (4 lbs) lighter
compared with the 750. Titanium is also also used in the front
fork, the inner tubes are coated with the resistant material.
An unique exhaust tuning valve has been mounted inside the exhaust
pipe. Suzuki says the system matches the exhaust back pressure
to engine speed, throttle position and gear selection for increased
torque, lower emissions and decreased noise.
The swinging arm is adjustable, as with the works racing machines.

There was no need to make any significant improvements for an
already potent motorcycle for the second model year. New graphics
and and uncoated exhaust pipe were the biggest changes for the
2002 year's GSX-R1000.

2003 Suzuki year code: K3

After the GSX-R1000 had been two years on the roads and and
race tracks Suzuki put out an even better version of the model
in late September of 2002. Suzuki engineers had been working
on the three things that make a fast bike faster weight,
power and handling. The 2003 year's GSX-R1000 is improved in
all three counts. It weigh less, has even more more power/torque
and even better handling.
The physical dimensions of the bike are almost identical with
the previous year's model. The seat height and the overall height
are somewhat lower but the geometry of the bike is exactly the
same as before. The already rigid aluminum allow frame is newly
designed and enforced with internal ribs. The frame as well
as the wheels were now coated black.
The front brakes are new. Suzuki decided to drop the six-piston
calipers. The new radially-mounted four-piston calipers weigh
30 g less and grip smaller 300 mm discs that save another 300
g weight. Though smaller, Suzuki claims that the new brakes
provide better stopping and turn-in performance.
The headlights of the 2003 year's GSX-R1000 are mounted vertically
to enable the ram-air intakes in the front to be placed 20 mm
nearer the bike's center line. The new design makes the GSX-R1000
look a bit like the Hayabusa. Even the instruments are redesigned.
The cylinder displacement of the engine remains the same 988
cc but more power and torque and better throttel responce has
been achieved by adding four ventilation holes between the cylinders
to equalize crankcase pressure beneath the pistons, moving the
air intake nearer to the centerline and upgrading the engine
management system to a 32-bit CPU that monitors and controls
the engine functions, input from the rider and the exhaust tuning
valve.
The entire exhaust system is now entirely made of titanium to
save additional weight (600 g or 1.32 lbs) and the tail light
is replaced with led type to give a more hi-tech look.
All the fine tuning have given the new GSX-R1000 2 bhp more
power, increased the torque with 10% and made the bike 2 kg
(4.4 lbs) lighter.
