Suzuki SX200R
1985—1992

I have tried to tell the Suzuki SX 200 R model history on this page as I know it. This page is still under construction. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

In 1982, Suzuki released two dual-purpose machines, the DR125S and the DR250S, both with lightweight diamond frame, full-floater rear suspension and four-stroke air-cooled single-cylinder SOHC engines. In Japan, these models were replaced by the SX125R and SX200R models in 1985.

Suzuki SX200R was a dual-sport machine with a compact, slim, and lightweight body with a dry weight of 101 kg (222 lbs). It was a modest off-road bike that emphasized ease of handling. Thanks to its large-capacity fuel tank, excellent fuel economy and comfortable riding position it was popular among touring riders.

Its engine was a newly designed 200cc 4-stroke single-cylinder SOHC, practically an enlargened SX125R engine, evolved from the '82 DR125/GN125 engine. Combined with a flat slide carburetor, the motor produced a maximum output of 20 PS.

The front wheel was fitted with a 240 mm stroke front fork. The rear wheel was fitted with an E-Full Floater and an aluminum swing arm. The tires were 21 inches in the front and 18 inches in the rear.

The export version of the Suzuki SX200R was called DR200. The model was dropped by Suzuki after the 1991 'M' model that was sold 1991–1992. In 1993, the Djebel 200 (called DR200SE in Europe) with enhanced touring capabilities and an electric starter, replaced the SX model.

Furthermore, a heavy-duty version called the DF200E/125E was released in 1997. The DF200E had a large rear carrier, a front carrier with an integrated headlight guard, extended front and rear mudguards, and a camouflage color scheme. This 1997 DF200E was almost identical in specifications to the DR200SE model later released for overseas markets. The Djebel 200/DF200E was dropped from the Japanese catalog in 2005. However, development continued for overseas markets. T

he air-cooled 199cc single-cylinder engine and basic chassis configuration of the SX200R remained virtually unchanged since 1985, continuing to be produced and sold around the world. Its 40-year-old, mature design is exceptionally reliable, and it has survived to the present day as a dual-purpose bike that's ”hard to break and easy to repair.”

The VanVan 200, a fun model with fat tires, was also produced from 2003 to 2016, and was equipped with fuel injection from 2007.
