Suzuki RG50 Gamma
1983—1995

I have tried to tell the Suzuki RG 50 Gamma model history on this page as I know it. The page is still under construction. In December 1982 Suzuki presented the RG50 Gamma, a small lightweight class 1 sports model moped, manufactured in Japan. The model was designed to look like Suzuki's works racers, although the RG50 was a street-legal sports bike. But it was fast. Really fast.

It was a big evolution from the previously released RG50E (and its cheaper version, the RG50T), which was air-cooled and had a 5-speed. Although it was a Class 1 moped, it was characterized by the high performance typical of Suzuki's sports models that dominated the WGP (predecessor of MotoGP) in the 2-stroke era.

Incorporating the power reed valve into the engine helped to increase torque in the low- and mid-rpm ranges. The liquid cooling system featuring a radiator equipped with an airflow-converging cover improved cooling performance and enhanced fuel economy. The RG50 Gamma was also provided with fairings and a 6-speed transmission. The under fairing was an optional equipment. Handling was improved through features such as the Full Floater suspension with a hexagonal pipe swingarm, smaller-diameter front wheel, and Anti Nose Dive Forks (ANDF).

The bike's mass was reduced by the widespread use of aluminum forgings, resulting in a machine that met the expectations of users looking for a sporty ride. The Suzuki RG50 Gamma combined the first hexagonal pipe frame adopted on a 50cc model produced in Japan with a newly developed 2-stroke liquid-cooled 1-cylinder power reed valve engine. With 50cc piston displacement it delivered 7.2 hp (5.3 kW) at 8,800 rpm (6.47 Nm torque). It weighed 85 kg (187 lbs) on the street with a full tank and had a top speed of whopping 120 km/h (75 mph).

The 1984 model was modified to meet the maximum speed limit regulations for Class 1 mopeds. By changing the shape of the muffler's expansion chamber, it became a torque-type engine (maximum output remained the same, but the number of rotations generated was reduced). 

In 1988, a full cowl specification was added, and at the end of 1989, a cowlless specification Wolf 50 (separate article) was released.

In 1990, the half-cowl specification that had existed since start was abolished, and only a full cowl version was available, and the wheel size was changed to 17 inches front and rear (same as the Wolf 50). 

The final version, the 1995 model, was equipped with rear view mirrors on both the left and right sides. In the mid-1990s, retro-type mopeds were becoming increasingly popular in class 1 sports mopeds, and Suzuki released the Colleda Sports 50 and Scrambler 50 (in 1996), as if to replace the RG50 Gamma.

I believe the model was only available on the Asian market. Starting in 1984, the the top speed was regulated to 60 km/h (37 mph) but in a Taiwanese sales brochure Suzuki claimed that it was capable of racing at 120 km/h (75 mph)! The model was produced until 1995, with several specification changes.

The first version model of the Suzuki RG50Γ was introduced by Suzuki in December 1982. The bike was a completely new design and not just an upgrade from the RG50E. 

The engine was equipped with a water-cooled 2-stroke single-cylinder piston reed valve that uses a newly designed aluminum cylinder, producing a maximum output of 7.2 PS at 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 0.66kg-m at 7,500 rpm.

The frame was a double cradle frame made of square high-tensile steel pipes, and the suspension used ANDF (anti-nose dive fork), full floater suspension, and hydraulic disc brakes.

With a liquid-cooled engine with a 6-speed transmission, full floater suspension, and a 16-inch front, it had a full-fledged build worthy of the works machine RG Gamma name with a performance that suited the Gamma name.

A distinctive part that only the early model RG50Γ has is the uniquely shaped tail cowl, in Japan commonly known as the kite cowl.

Although the square frame was made of steel, it was is painted silver to make it look like aluminum. The 50cc riders at the time were impressed by the bike's unique full floater suspension, anti-dive front fork and built-in turn signals, which were the most advanced at the time.

Five body colors were available: Super White (14L), Marble Pure Red (07P), Marble Canadian Blue (05K), Solid Black (019), and Stardust Silver Metallic (737)

The second generation of the Suzuki RG50Γ was presented in February 1984. Since the second generation the RG50Γ was restricted to 60 km/h and had a speed limiter, but its quick handling is still intact. Although the top speed of the 50 Gamma was suppressed, the acceleration was even sharper than before the regulation.

The engine settings and the shape of the muffler's expansion chamber was redesigned to comply with the maximum speed limit for moped type 1. The change was to focus on torque and fuel efficiency.

The maximum output rotation speed decreased from 8,000 rpm to 7,200 rpm, and the maximum torque increased from 0.66 kg-m at 7,500 rpm to 0.72 kg-m at 7,000 rpm.

There were three body colors available. The options were Super White (14L), Marble Pure Red (07P) and Black (019).

The wheel that had previously been painted black, were now aluminum silver colored.

The third version of the Suzuki RG50Γ was launched in March 1985. Its front cowl shape was redesigned and the turn signal lenses were made smaller.

Although it is made of steel, the square frame is painted silver to make it look like aluminum, making it unique. Moped riders at the time were impressed by its unique full floater suspension and built-in turn signals, which were the most advanced at the time.

The vehicle weighed 6 kg (13 lbs) less than the Yamaha RZ50 and 10 kg (22 lbs) less than the Honda MBX50.

A new version of the Suzuki RG50Γ was presented in May 1988. A works racer style seat cowl was installed to the bike to make it look even more racy.
The anti-dive front fork (ANDF) was discontinued. New graphics. The specs show that the dry weight of the RG50Γ was increased from 69 kg (152) to 71 kg (157 lbs).

Two versions of the RG50Γ was available; a version with the top fairing (RG50EWJ) and a version with full fairing (RG50EWCJ) were available. The price had gone up from 193,000 yen to 218,000 yen.

In June 1988, a black full cowl specification was added as a variation model. 1988 was the last year RG50Γ was available with a bikini fairing.

At the end of 1989, a cowless specification version of the bike was launched by Suzuki, the Wolf 50.

The 1990 model of Suzuki RG50Γ was released in January 1990 after some changes. The lineup now included only a full cowl version of the RG50Γ.

The wheels have been changed to hollow 3-spoke aluminum cast wheels. The tires also use new flat tires, and the muffler is now a chamber type. The rear wheel size has been changed from 18 inches to 17 inches. New fender/mud guard shape.

The ground clearance was reduced from 180 mm (7.1 inches) to 155 mm (6.0 inches). The dry weight of the RG50Γ was increased from 71 kg (157 lbs) to 73 kg (161 lbs). After 1990, no significant updates were made to the Suzuki RG50 Gamma.

The two 1990 RG50EXCL colors were European Blue (ONE) and Urban Grey Metallic (17U).

In 1991, the the works-style blue and white color option was changed to a two-tone black and pink livery with flashy fluorescent stripes. The Urban Gray Metallic continued unchanged. The RG50Γ was now equipped with an anti-theft circuit. Major specifications remain unchanged.

The '91 Suzuki RG50 Gamma was available in two colors:
Space Black / Pink / Orange (13Z) and Black / Urban Gray Metallic (09X).

All the major specifications remained unchanged. This was the final version of RG50 Gamma. Still, I have reasons to believe that the model was available in shops several years after the production of the model was stopped.

While the earlier models had a rear view mirror only on the left side of the bike, the final version of the RG50Γ was equipped with rear view mirrors on both sides as standard equipment.

The colors of the bike were given new names but they looked the same. The Dynamic Blue No.4 was renamed to Special White No. 3 / Dynamic Blue No.4, and Black has been renamed to Black / Urban Gray Metallic, but they look the same. The price of the '95 RG50Γ was increased by 1000 yen.
