Suzuki model year code: R

Suzuki have had loads of trouble making an impression
in the 400 market. The GSF400 Bandit should have made some kind
of mark but the early models proved to be unrealiable. Carburetor
problems plagued its far from subtle early incarnations, though
it arguably had more style and sophistication than the Impulse.
GSX400 Impulse (internal code GK79A) was released in 1994 for
Japanese home market with a chassis straight out of the seventies,
although its far more competent (125 mph, 55 mpg) than the
old bruisers. The bike has the same engine internals as the GSF400
Bandit but has different engine cases and a much larger frame.
The motors still highly strung and therefore somewhat misplaced
in retro guise. Two different versions were made, the GSX400S (GSX400 Type S) had a cockpit fairing and blue/white paint scheme.

Although the models look identical at a glance,
there are some differences between the different model years of
Suzuki GSX400 Impulse. The wheels , the side covers and the oil filter
covers and the tailpiece, to mention some details, are different.
The wheelbase and the performance are the same but the bike is
now a bit longer and little heavier than the first model.
New KYB suspension.
Some of the 1996 models and later had “KYB” stickers on the front and back suspensions. Handles on both sides of the saddle.

GSX400 Impulse became soon somewhat of a cult bike
in Japan, a fact that held the used bike prices high. The GSX400
Impulse owner haven't had the same problems as many GSX400 owner's
in the early eighties with overheated engines, burned up alternators
and corroding exhaust etc. The Impulse is as reliable as any other
modern Japanese motorcycle with good performance.
There's nothing wrong with the bike, the engine runs smooth and
quiet, the top end is particularly rattle free. The brakes (290
mm double disks at the front and a 250 mm single disk at the rear)
are excellent and the engine is powerful but the engine never
manages to find a sweet spot with enough of torque.
Sum summarum, the bike could be described as adequate. The suspension
and comfort are adequate, the geometry's relatively fast turning
and the stability at higher speeds is not as good as old bruisers
like GS550. If the Impulse never inspires neither does it frighten.
