Suzuki GSX-S1000S Katana
2019–

I have tried to tell the Suzuki Katana model history on this page as I know it. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

This is a growing web site, managed by one private person. All the pages are constantly under construction.

Suzuki Katana 2020

The original GSX1100S Katana was unveiled in 1980 and rolled into showrooms the following year. Back then, one of the coolest sports bikes around. The model was discontinued in the late eighties, but made comeback a couple of times, with only minor changes made to the original design.

The latest updated cersion of the 1980 Katana was launched in 2000, called Final Edition. That was supposed to be the very last big Katana ever made. In Japan, Suzuki has offered several Katana models with smaller engines, but those models have only been available for the Asian home market.

But people in the West also loved the Katana design. Suzuki reveiled a prototype of the new Katana at EICMA show in Milan in 2017. It was suxh a success that Suzuki lauched the model in Europe in 2019 and in USA the following year.

The new Katana is based on the GSX-S1000, another naked roadster that features a powerful engine and state of the art electronics. It features a three-stage traction control and ABS ensured by a set of Brembo callipers. All the lights on the bike are LED, and the dash is a TFT unit that resembles a lot with the one on the GSX-R1000 superbike.

The Katana engine is devired from the K5 GSX-R1000 powerplant, updated and civilised for the Katana.

The coolest thing about the new Katana is definitely the look that it shares the same line with its older sibling.

Unfortunately the Katana, although offering the same performance as the GSX-S1000, is quite a lot more expensive than its cousin. In USA, buying the Katana instead of GSX-S1000, makes you around 3000 dollars poorer. Still, the new Katana is a popular bike and in many countries the initial orders sold out quickly.

The kids that dreamed about a Katana in the 1980s are now grown up and can afford it.

The Japanese motorcycle shows in Tokyo and Osaka were cancelled in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemi,. Instead organised a virtual bike show showing new Katana models for the following season. The bikes showed had an interesting new look that moves the Katana away from the pure 80s-tribute look of the silver and black options offered so far.

The first is a candy red, with colour-matched wheels and contrasting gold-coloured bars and forks. For nothing more than a splash of paint it’s remarkable how the addition of some colour transforms the previously monochrome Katana.

The second new scheme is a matt black that separates itself from the existing gloss black option by again using gold bars and forks, this time with gold wheels added as well. The Katana badge is also picked out in gold, while the Suzuki branding on the tank is in gloss black on the matt background. More subtle than the red option, it’s still much more eye-catching than the current all-black offering.

The new second generation Katana got new color schemes, but also major updates on the engine and electronic control system.

Although there are no major changes in terms of specs, the engine was improved in many details, from changing the camshaft to changing the bolt holes in the crankcase. The specifications differ between countries and different markets. Note that the differences are most likely due the different safety regulations or because of the way the bikes are measured in different countries.

The shape of the air cleaner box has been changed as well, and the intake and exhaust system has also been updated in order not to worsen the power characteristics although making the motor more enviroment fiendly.

The updated Katana gets the  Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (SIRS), that includes A/B/C drive mode selector, traction control with five settings, bi-directional quickshifter, Ride-By-Wire throttle, ), Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS), low rpm assist to avoid stalling, and the Suzuki easy start assist, which helps start the bike by just touching the ignition button once and not having to hold it all the way.

By newly adopting the "throttle-by-wire system", the right grip has been refreshed. Not only does it make throttle operation smoother, but it can also be linked with the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) that can switch power modes and various electronic control devices. The new electronically controlled throttle body has a smaller throttle bore, optimizing the balance between idling control and output characteristics.

A new "rubber mount" handle has been adopted that incorporates rubber parts between the stem and handle post to reduce handlebar vibrations.

The Katana has a fully adjustable front fork and a preload and rebound damping adjustable monoshock at the rear, both made by Kayaba. The brakes are twin radially mounted Brembo calipers and 310mm discs at the front and a single disc at the rear. No ABS brakes are offered.

There are also minor changes to the instrument panel. The LSD display has white backllightning during daytime but changes color to orange/amber color display when it gets dark.

The 2022 Suzuki Katana color options in United Kingdom were Solid Iron Gray (YUD) and Metallic Mat Stellar Blue (YUA). In India, the offered colors were Metallic Mat Stellar Blue (YUA) and Metallic Mystic Silver (BCX). They may have been other colors offered as well in some parts of the world.

The gray and the blue are new colors for the Katana. even the '22 Silver Katana looks slightly different from the first generation Silver Katana. The Suzuki logo on the tank has been changed from red to black. The earlier two-tone silver and black seat has become black and dark bronze silver. Also, the outer tube of the front fork is gold, and the black wheels has been changed to a deep silver color.

In Japan, the 2025 GSX-S1000S Katana was launched in late October 2024 and for the European market in January 2025. A new color option, Pearl Vigor Blue (YKY) with gold anodized front fork and bronze wheels, was added to the catalogue. The classic Katana color, Metallic Mystic Silver (YMD), remained almost unchanged. It still had its gold anodized fork tubes but the black coated wheels were now replaced with bright copper-finished wheels. Besides the color change, the 2025 Suzuki Katana remains unchanged in terms of performance, technology and features.

However, it now gets an O2 sensor in the exhaust system to comply with the latest Euro 5+ emission norms.
