A
couple of years after the presentation of the Suzuki GSX-R750 a little
brother with a 250cc engine was born. Like its big brother, the
GSX-R250 had a box-frame (steel, not aluminum), full fairing,
Full-floater rear swing and a four-cylinder four-stroke engine.
Despite having a steel frame, it still managed to be a 138 kg (304 lbs) lightweight dry. The acclaimed curb weight was 158 kg (348 lbs). A half-fairing version was also available.
While the GSX-R750 engine was air and oil-cooled, the baby
brother had a liquid-cooled short-stroke engine with a cylinder bore of 49 mm and a piston of 33 mm, delivering 45 bhp at 14 500 revs. It had 17-inch cast wheels and 300 mm twin disc brake
at the front. The 3-spoke wheels had a wing cross-sectional shape, intended to reduce rotational resistance and noise.
The riding position was not as forward-leaning as one could assume from a extreme sports bike. The handlebar was moved to a lower position on the 1989 K model.
The GSX-R250 was launched in March 1987. Two months later, in May 1987, an All-Black version with Bronze colored graphics was released. Not many examples of any of these model versions are seen
outside Japan.
Colors available for the 1987 GSX-R250 were Blue/White (9UV), Pearl Twinkle Red / Prussian Blue Metallic (9RD) and Pearl Novelty Black (33J). The red/blue version was available both with or without the lower fairing.

The 1989 GSX-R250R (GJ73A), launched in February 1989, had a new welded aluminium twin tube frame, strengthen front fork, reinforced swing arm with a stabilizer, 18-inch rear wheel and high-performance front brake with 4-pot calipers. The model also had a redesigned, slightly slimmer seat, resulting 4 mm lower seat height. The handlebar was replaced to a lower position, giving a sportier riding position. The silencer that was coated black earlier was now aluminium colored.
The 2-barrel carburetor of the GSX-R250 was replaced with a 4-barrel downdraft carburetor to improve intake efficiency and make it more compact.
A letter 'R' was added to the end of the model name, stating that this was more radical version compared to the somewhat ”more polite” GSX-R250, that was still available in two almost identical liveries. The '89 GSX-R250, presented simultaneously with the GSX-R250R in February 1989, was offered in Prussian Blue Metallic / Gray Metallic (33J) with white wheels and Pearl Novelty Black (24V) with Gray Metallic wheels. Both of them versions had similar Gray Metallic and White diagonal stripes. A third livery with different graphics (no stripes) was also available, an all Black version with Gold graphics.
The GSX-R250R was offered in Pearl Still White / Marble Parsec Blue (3JK), Space Black No.2 / Marble Italian Red (8RY), Urban Gray Metallic / Pearl Novelty Black (3CG) and Pearl Novelty Black (33J). The Blue/White version had White wheels, the Black version had Gray Metallic wheels, the Red/Black had Red wheels. A limited run ”Black version” with black wheels, black front fork etc. was also launched by Suzuki in 1989.
A SP model
(Sports Production, pure street-legal racing model), with a single seat, a close ratio transmission and fully adjustable suspension was launched together with the 1989 GSX-R250RK in February 1989. The engine was equipped with a slingshot carburator and SCAI, Suzuki Condenced Air Intake.
The SP model's front suspension preload and compression can be adjusted in 10 steps and the rear suspension preload can be adjusted in 4 steps and the compression in 21 steps. The rear shock had a separated gas chamber and could be adjusted remotely.
The SP model was available in Blue and White (3JK), Suzuki's Racing colors.

1990 Suzuki year code: L

For the 1990 season, the GSX-R250 remained unchanged but was only offered i all-black livery. The standard GSX-R250 model never got the new aluminium frame, the new swing or any other updates that its racier sibling, the GSX-R250R. It had a box-frame of steel, not aluminum. The frames and the swings looked quite different and made the models easy to tell apart, even without the 'RR' decals on the more advanced (and more expensive) model.
The 1990 Suzuki GSX-R250R was available in four different liveries: Blue/White (3JK), Red/Black (8RY), Black (36X) and Black/Silver (3CG).
Retail price in Japan: 578,000 yen
A Sports Production (SP) model was offered in Blue/White (3JK), its retail price was 617,000 yen.
None of the GSX-R250 versions were manufactured after the 1990 season. Suzuki discontinued the model and was replaced by the Suzuki GSX250F Across, that was almost a replica of the GSX-R250. |
