Suzuki DR125S

I have tried to tell the DR 125 S model history on this page as I know it. This page is still under construction. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

The DR125S was presented as a 1982-year's model, suitable as an entry-level enduro bike. As for some other DR models, the DR125 available in different versions. At first, there were the pure trail version, DR125, with no license plate holder or mirrors, and the DR125S, a street-legal version of the same bike. In 1994 an electric starter was added, and the street legal version's name was changed to DR125SE.

New model. The DR125S was concidered as a teriffic all-round enduro bike for beginners in 1982. It was rather small and light compared to may of its contestors but its suspension was firm enough for even larger riders. It had a smooth and tough engine, not very powerful but the high quality of the clutch and the gearbox (six speeds) helped a lot. There didn't seem to be nothing wrong with the new four-stroker. Except for one thing; the rear light got broken easily — kicked by the owner when swinging his leg over the saddle... About the engine performance; The Germans claim their model had only 10 hp (10 hp @ 9,500 rpm, 9,8 Nm @ 8,000 rpm) but the DR125S sold in Finland had three hp more (see the figures below), like the domestic model sold in Japan. As often is the case, differens laws regulations makes that the performance figures differ between different markets. Even the specified measurements can be different. Updated model with improved suspension, enlarger air cleaner and new side branch exhaust that improved effiency, especielly in the mid-revs. New graphics. Gold wheel frames, color options were Yellow/Blue for the DR125 and Black/Blue for the DR125S. Initial frame number: SF43A-100001

Complete new model. The first you notice is the larger fuel tank, the seat that continued over the tank at the front end and the disc brake at the front. Only minor, mainly cosmetical, changes was made to the DR125S after 1990 until the model was replaced by the DR125SE in 1995. Suzuki Egypt has still a picture on the 1990 DR125S on their web site (June 2004). I don't know if they still have unused bikes that were manufactured a decade and a half ago. I wouldn't trust the specs on their web site anyway. They claim that the bike has drum brakes front and rear.
