Suzuki TU250 Volty (NJ47A)
19942004
I have tried to tell the TU 250 Volty model history on this
page as I know it. This page is still under construction.
I would be grateful of any contributions sales brochures, magazine ads,
magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material
in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send
them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible.
If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these
instructions. |
The Suzuki TU250 was a single-cylinder, air-cooled street bike manufactured by Suzuki across two generations from 1994 to 2019. The TU250 has a single overhead cam (SOHC), unsleeved, four-stroke engine with chain-drive, a standard riding posture and styling resembling the Universal Japanese Motorcycle (UJM) of the 1960s and 1970s.
The first generation TU was introduced to the Japanese domestic market (JDM) in 1994 in both 125cc or 249cc models. Variations of the bike marketed in the JDM and other regions include the VanVan (Asia, Europe), TU250G Grasstracker (Asia), TU250GB Grasstracker Bigboy (Asia) and TU250 Volty (Asia, Europe).
The original TU250 Volty was basically a Japan built GN250 with a higher seating position, no gear indicator or tacho. The bike was lightweight with a standard riding posture meant to emulate the UJM — Universal Japanese Motorcycle — popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Volty was a very popular bike in Japan. It was good looking, cheap, lightweight and easy to ride. It was a simple bike with an air-cooled engine with two valves and a single camshaft. The engine was known for its reliability and low maintenance cost.
Tthe first generation TU250, marketed in Asia as the Volty, was marketed in Europe from 1997 to 2003 as the TU250X Volty. Minor changes and upgrades were made during the years of production (1994 –2003) but the TU250 Volty remained mechanically the same, the changes usually only cosmetical.
The second generation TU250 was manufactured at Suzuki's assembly plant in Toyokawa, Japan, and was marketed in Asia (2003-2019), Oceania and North America (2009-2019).
