Colleda 125SL
1962

I have tried to tell the Suzuki Colleda 125 SL model history on this page as I know it. I would be grateful of any contributions — sales brochures, magazine ads, magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible. If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these instructions.

The Colleda 125SL, launched by Suzuki in 1962, replaced the Colleda ST models (1955–1960) and the Colleda 125 SH (1961). It had the now familiar Suzuki ”S” badge on the fuel tank and a smaller one on the engine side covers. The SJK brand name was no longer used when advertising Suzuki bikes in the sixties.

The Colleda 125SK was a beautiful bike with lots of shiny chrome paired with glossy black painted fenders, and frame. The standard version, made for the domestic customers, had a single seat and a sturdy bagage holder behind it. The bike was advertised as a high-performance motorcycle ideal for both work and leisure activities.

The 125SL was launched together with the similary designed 125SK on the same chassi. While the 125SL had a gutsy long-stroke single-cylinder engine, the 125SK had a more high-revving twin engine. Both models had 4-speed rotary type transmission with similar gearing and electric and a kick starters.

While the power produced by a typical long stroke engine is relatively less, it has its own advantages. These engines produce a healthier torque at the lower range of the rev spectrum lending themselves to torquey, lazy revving machines quite well. The 125SL engine generated maximum 8.0 hp (5.88 kW) horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 10.8 Nm (1.1 kg-m) torque at 4,000 rpm. The claimed top speed of the 125SL was 80 km/h (49.7 mph)

The frame was an underbone type and made of pressed steel. The suspension was the modern type with with oil-damping shock absorbers both front and rear that delivered reasonable comfortable cushioning performance, even on Japanese roads that could be quite rough at their places.

The Colleda 125SL was a short-lived model that was replaced by the twins engine bikes Colleda 125 S30 (1963–1964), Colleda 125 S30-2 (1965–1966) and Colleda 125 S30-3 (1967).

.
It's not easy to tell the Colleda models 125SK and 125SK apart if you don't see the cylinders clearly. It's much easier if you see the left side of the bike. The Twin cylinder 125SK has an exhaust pipe on both sides of the motorcycle, the 125SL has only one pipe on the right side.
