Suzuki e-Let's (UZ50)

Coupled with the growing needs for reduction of both CO2 emission and fuel consumption, the demand for electric vehicles was increasingly strong, and motorcycles were no exception to such demand. Under such a circumstance, Suzuki started the research and development of electric motorcycles in 2008, and started selling its first electric motorcycle ”e-Let's” in January 2012.
According to Suzuki, the e-Let’s offered the same manoeuvrability and user-friendliness as a scooter with an engine displacement up to 50cc. Plus, it offers even greater convenience because it has a removable battery that the user can charge at home.
With both the eco-friendly and user-friendly performances emphasized, the e-Let's was equipped with various new systems and functions, such as an environmentally friendly next-generation motor, energy regeneration system (during deceleration), eco-mode running function, rear tire drive inhibition when the center stand is used, and automatic power-off function.
To allow users of the existing engine-driven models of scooters to easily shift to the electric type, the e-Let's could be used through the same control operations (switches, etc.) with the gasoline-driven Let's 4, while enabling the torque to be increased gradually according to the throttle openings. Also, to relieve concerns about absence of a receptacle outlet or battery stealing in a car park, it employs a removable battery that can be carried home for charging. In addition, to prepare for battery's running out during moving or in the field, users can store a spare battery or a battery charger in the vehicle.

The brand new e-Let's was unveiled to the world public for the first time at the okyo Motor Show in November 2011. Prototypes on Suzuki's first electric scooter had earlier been spotted on the streets of Japan but displaying a completed product using technology combinding environmentally friendly zero emissions with everyday usability came as a surprise for many. Only a few weeks after the show, the e-Let's was launched in Japan and was available in shops in Januari 2012.
The new Suzuki single-seater e-scooter was strictly meant for intra-city commuters, its primary target was urban areas. It was powered by a quite powerful wheel hub motor that was equipped with a regenerative braking system and a detachable lithium-ion battery. It featured a steel underbone chassis like regular scooters but it had been reinforced using pressed steel plates to ensure structural rigidity. Equipped with the compact and lightweight frame it weighed no more than a comparable gasoline-powered model.
The e-Let's was actually 2 kg (4.4 lbs) lighter that Let's 4 basket, the model the electric scooter was based on.
The e-Let's offersed the typical features that distinguish an electric scooter: impressive acceleration, low noise and vibration, and zero emissions.
The lithium-ion battery had a built-in Battery Management Unit (BMU) which monitored the battery status, and could be detached to be recharged. A single charge from a Japanese 100V household outlet took approximately four hours, giving a range of about 30 kilometers at an assumed average speed of 30 km/h on flat roads.
The compartment under the seat can carry either a charger or a spare battery, thus making it more convenient to charge away from home. It can also extend its range by replacing with a fully-charged battery. In addition to the basic e-Let’s which is equipped with a battery and a charger, the e-Let’s W withan extra battery was also available.
The e-Let’s was launched for the Japanese domestic market only and were not sold outside Japan.
