For
the model year of 2001 Suzuki introduced a new GSX-R model that
replaced the largest and most powerful of the racing replica family,
GSX-R1100. As the model name reveals, the engine's cylinder displacement
was 100 cc smaller than its predecessor but the new 988 cc engine
was more than adequate to give the GSX-R1000 enormous prestanda.
It delivers 160 bhp at 11,000 rpm and the bike was capable of
making a quarter mile in under 10 seconds.
The GSX-R1000 is light, powerful and more balanced than any other
street legal race replica and even many racing bikes! Naturally
there's models that are more suitable for touring and commuting
but if you are looking for a really fast bike that you like to
use both on track and on the road, then look no further. The GSX-R1000
is the bike for you. It's the best bike in its class.

The new GSX-R1000 was voted as the best Internation Bike Of
The Year in 2001 by 13 bike magazines from all over the world.
The GSX-R750 won the award in 1997.
The GSX-R1000 is not just an enlargened version of the GSX-R750,
although it shares many features with its little brother. The
main frame is basically the same in both models, but the material
used on the big brother is 0,5 mm thicker. According to Suzuki,
the torsional rigidity of the frame has increased 10% in comparison
with the 750. The dimensions of the bike have more in common
with the TT racer Suzuki RGV500 than the GSX-R750.
The GSX-R1000 engine is basically a redigned GSX-R750 engine.
The R1000 has 1 mm bigger bore and 13 mm longer stroke, newly
designed (sligtly lighter) pistons with lower crown and gear-driven
counter balancer, to mention a few differences. The engine weighs
59 kg (130 lbs) which is slightly heavier than the 750 engine
but 14 kg (31 lbs) lighter than the engine of the GSX-R1300
Hayabusa.
Using titanium for the exhaust pipe and the inside of the silencer
the R1000's exhaust system has become 1,8 kg (4 lbs) lighter
compared with the 750. Titanium is also also used in the front
fork, the inner tubes are coated with the resistant material.
An unique exhaust tuning valve has been mounted inside the exhaust
pipe. Suzuki says the system matches the exhaust back pressure
to engine speed, throttle position and gear selection for increased
torque, lower emissions and decreased noise.
The swinging arm is adjustable, as with the works racing machines.

2003 Suzuki year code: K3
|
After the GSX-R1000 had been two years on the roads and and
race tracks Suzuki put out an even better version of the model
in late September of 2002. Suzuki engineers had been working
on the three things that make a fast bike faster weight,
power and handling. The 2003 year's GSX-R1000 is improved in
all three counts. It weigh less, has even more more power/torque
and even better handling.
The physical dimensions of the bike are almost identical with
the previous year's model. The seat height and the overall height
are somewhat lower but the geometry of the bike is exactly the
same as before. The already rigid aluminum allow frame is newly
designed and enforced with internal ribs. The frame as well
as the wheels were now coated black.
The front brakes are new. Suzuki decided to drop the six-piston
calipers. The new radially-mounted four-piston calipers weigh
30 g less and grip smaller 300 mm discs that save another 300
g weight. Though smaller, Suzuki claims that the new brakes
provide better stopping and turn-in performance.
The headlights of the 2003 year's GSX-R1000 are mounted vertically
to enable the ram-air intakes in the front to be placed 20 mm
nearer the bike's center line. The new design makes the GSX-R1000
look a bit like the Hayabusa. Even the instruments are redesigned.
The cylinder displacement of the engine remains the same 988
cc but more power and torque and better throttel responce has
been achieved by adding four ventilation holes between the cylinders
to equalize crankcase pressure beneath the pistons, moving the
air intake nearer to the centerline and upgrading the engine
management system to a 32-bit CPU that monitors and controls
the engine functions, input from the rider and the exhaust tuning
valve.
The entire exhaust system is now entirely made of titanium to
save additional weight (600 g or 1.32 lbs) and the tail light
is replaced with led type to give a more hi-tech look.
All the fine tuning have given the new GSX-R1000 2 bhp more
power, increased the torque with 10% and made the bike 2 kg
(4.4 lbs) lighter.

2007 Suzuki year code: K7

Suzuki revealed a significantly updated GSX-R1000 for 2007 at the Paris Motor Show. The new bike gained 14 pounds over the 2006 model which is most likely due to its new exhaust system and new emissions regulations. To counter this significant weight increase, Suzuki claims improved aerodynamics. Although not a completely new model, the engine and chassis have been updated. It also features three different engine mapping configurations, selectable via a three-position handlebar switch; standard, sport, and 'wet' (which would likely soften power significantly, and would also be helpful on cold tires).
New Engine
New 999cc 4-stroke, 4-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine for increased power, torque and acceleration with forged aluminum alloy pistons, chrome-moly shotpeend connecting rods, hollow camshafts, and a secondary balancer shaft for reduced vibration

New more compact fuel injection system features the Suzuki Dual Throttle Valve System (SDTV) - with twelve smaller holes for improved fuel delivery and steeper angle for secondary injectors

New intake and exhaust ports are reshaped and eight percent larger with larger titanium exhaust valves, more aggressive camshafts, and iridium spark plugs

New Idle Speed Control (ISC) system for improved cold starting, consistent idle quality and reduced emissions

New high volume Suzuki Advanced Exhaust System (SAES) with equal length head pipes feeding a unique under engine chamber leading to two compact aluminum/titanium mufflers on each side

The new mid-pipe includes a Suzuki Exhaust Tuning (SET) system for maximum torque throughout the rpm range and an oxygen sensor used by the engine management system and combined with the under-engine catalyzer for reduced emissions

New larger 48mm ventilation holes between cylinders reduce pumping losses and the crankcase breather system now features a reed valve to prevent pressure waves in the airbox from reaching the crankcase

New self adjusting hydraulic clutch minimzes changes in clutch feel over a long race

Back-torque limiting clutch allows smooth downshifts, plus a rack and pinion operating system provides more positive clutch feel

New engine management system is four time more powerful than the previous system and allows the rider to choose from three engine settings to match riding conditions with a handlebar mounted switch

New larger radiator utilizes a trapezoidal shape seen on works racebikes with 10% more cooling capacity. The oil cooler now works with a larger oil pump.

New Chassis
All new aluminum alloy twin-spar frame is built using five castings for lightweight, unmatched handling and performance, increased production precision, and reduced weight

New braced aluminum-alloy swingarm is more rigid and features an innovative new link system which pivots on the swingarm itself for increased traction and reduced side loads

New DLC coated 43mm forks and rear shock now feature high and low speed compression damping along with adjustable rebound and preload settings

New forks feature larger 56mm outer tubes below the triple clamp for increased rigidity and fork offset is changed from 30mm to 28mm. Front wheel travel is also increased from 120mm to 125mm

New electronically controlled steering damper uses a solenoid valve to move a tapered needle reducing or increasing oil flow to adjust damping force
New adjustable rider footpegs can be moved into three different positions to suit rider preferences
New 310mm front brake discs are attached to the carrier with 12 floating mounts instead of 8 for improved heat transfer away from the disc and are also thinner at 5.0mm for reduced weightRear disc works with a single piston caliper and is mounted above the swingarm for reduced braking effect on the rear suspension

New wind tunnel developed bodywork features an aggressive new style, reduced frontal area and a taller windscreen for optimum aerodynamic peformance

New vertically stacked headlight features an updated shape with a compact projector bulb and when combined with the sleek bodywork and tailsection offer maximum rider mobility and improved styling

A new easy-to-read instrument cluster includes a step motor controlled analog tachometer, digital LCD speedometer, dual tripmeters, clock, convenient gear position sensor, rpm indicator light and a new LCD engine mode indicator displaying which performance setting has been selected by the rider

Close-ratio slick shifting six-speed transmission with an adjustable back torque limiter for smoother downshifts

Bridgestone radial tires mounted on cast aluminum wheels featuring thin spoke design with optimized wall thickness to reduce unsprung weight
