I
have tried to tell the story of the Suzuki GSX-R 1100 on this page as I know it.I would be grateful of any contributions sales brochures, magazine ads,
magazine articles, pictures, specs, facts, corrections etc. Please scan the material
in JPEG format (large enough that all the details are visible) and send
them to me. Please tell me the source and the publication date if possible.
If you send me pictures of your own bike, please follow these
instructions.

1986
Suzuki year code: G

A
year after the presentation of the GSX-R750, a big brother with
a 1100cc engine was born. Like its older brother, the GSX-R1100
had lightweight aluminium box frame, full fairing, Full-floater
rear swing and a four-cylinder four-stroke engine. The styling design uses the same horizontal two-lamp headlamps as the GSX-R750 to create a racer-like style that dates back to the Endurance World Championship.
The frame differed from the GSX-R750 but only because it received extra bracing. Steering head rake and front-end trail figures at 26 degrees and 116 mm were slightly more relaxed than the 750. Combined with the longer swingarm fitted to the GSX-R1100, the 1460 mm wheelbase made it a nicer bike on the road.
The all-new GSX-R1100 claimed 10 hp more than Suzuki’s existing GSX1100EF, but it also weighed 41 kg less and had 90 mm shorter wheelbase. The new engine was powerfu and quick-revving but still flexible and torquey because the race-ready flat-slide carbs on the 750 had been replaced with road-friendly 34 mm Mikuni BST CV carburettors. It had a four-into-one exhaust.
While the GSX-R750 had six gears, the engineers at Suzuki thought that the GSX-R1100 with more torque only needed five gears.
The engine is a 1057cc oil-cooled 4-cycle in-line 4-cylinder DOHC 4-valve that uses an advanced SACS (Suzuki Advanced Cooling System) that sprays 20 litres of oil per minute on the cylinder head. The GSX-R1100 had an enormous oil cooler takes care of the recovered heat and powerful oil pump that shoved the lube around the engine and through the cooler at a much higher rate than a conventional motor. This removed the need for water-cooling. As a result, the engine is 22% lighter than with conventional air cooling, giving the GSX-R1100 (back then) awesome power-to-weight ratio.
The GSX-R1100 front fork was equipped with NEAS, electronic anti-dive unit that controlled the hydraulics and a steering damper. It had 41 mm telescopic 4-way preload and 3-way anti-dive adjustable front suspension and 4-way rebound damping adjustable full floater monoshock rear suspension.
The GSX-R1100 was fitted with 18-inch wheels. Larger wheels enabled larger brake discs.
It had 300 mm dual discs with 4-piston calipers at front and a single 220 mm disc at rear.

1987
Suzuki year code: H

There were essentially four major generations of the Suzuki GSX-R1100: three air/oil-cooled and one liquid-cooled. Generation 1 was the G, H and J models (1986–1988), all of them notable for their slab-sided styling and running the original 1052 cc engine. ”If it ain't broke, why fix it.” There were no changes made for year two other than colour.

1988
Suzuki year code: J

The 1988 Suzuki GSX-R1100 scored Enkei 3-spoke rims that lifted the looks of the machine and gave it a slightly wider contact patch on the rear. The front guard was widened a little, while the only engine mod was increased capacity for the massive front oil cooler. The sidestand also came in for attention, to make the bike a little less prone to tipping over. The changes made the J version 2 kg (4.4 lbs) heavier..

1989
Suzuki year code: K

Generation two of the Suzuki GSX-R1100 was the K and L series of 1989-1990.
The GSX-R1100 got its first major update since its introduction in 1989. It got a new frame, a bigger and more powerful engine and the same sort of rounded-edge styling that GSX-R750 and GSX-R400. The chassis was lower and heavier, with some similarities to the 750 Slingshot of 1988. The GSX-R1100 had now 17-inch wheels.
Like its smaller siblings, the GSX-R1100 got now Slingshot carburetors. The upgraded engine had bore x stroke changed from 76mm x 58mm to 78mm x 59mm, and the displacement expanded from 1052 cc to 1127 cc. Even more power was squeezed out of the motor by introducing an air intake in front of the cowling and adopting two mufflers. The oil cooler was changed to a curved type to improve the cooling efficiency, and the frame rigidity was improved by 25%. The dry weight increased by 13 kg from the initial model to 210 kg.
The engine got more power, from 130 to 138 hp, but the bike bike got also heavier. The model was well received by the customers, but the new Yamaha FZR1000 EXUP that debuted the same year shaded the GSX-R1100, offering more power, less weight and sharper handling.
From 1989 on, the GSX-R1100 was regularly tweaked – getting change to the geometry in 1990 and new plastics in 1991.

1990 Suzuki year code: L

The 1990 Suzuki GSX-R1100 was upgdraded in the suspension, tires
and the swingarm. The inverted Showa front forks together with
the new 130/60ZR17 Michelin front tire gave the bike better stability
in the front fork and better handling. Even the rear shocker was
new, and the rear tire wider (180/55 ZR 17).
The swingarm was
made longer, giving the bike 35 mm (1.4 in) longer wheelbase and
better high-speed stability. The 36mm carbs were increased to 40mm.

1991
Suzuki year code: M

Generation three was the 1991–1992 M and N series and this was a final period of refinement with the air/oil cooled engine, rather than radical change. The powerplant had numerous alterations, including a switch from forked rockers to single arms and shim adjustment. Carburettor size increased massively from 36mm to 40, though the power increase from 143 to 145 hp was only slight. Meanwhile, the bike's weight had climbed to 226 kg.
Suspension was given a major make-over, boasting more comprehensive adjustment front and back, along with a greater choice of rates. Even the gearbox wasn’t left out, scoring cooling oil jets on the top three cogs. Visually, it’s marked as the first time the headlights were enclosed behind a screen, for cleaner aerodynamics.
